Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has said that the country needs a truly effective and transparent election to move forward, not one rooted in the “rotten practices of the past.”

Speaking as the chief guest at a public gathering organized by Biyanibazar Upazila unit of Jamaat in Sylhet on Wednesday, Dr. Rahman emphasized the party’s demand for a fair, impartial and meaningful electoral process.

“Jamaat does not support premature or unprepared elections. We want an election that is free, fair, and earns the confidence of the people,” he said.

Criticizing the current political and administrative environment, he pointed to a lack of moral leadership as a key reason the country has failed to progress as expected. “There are many forms of corruption in Bangladesh, but the most dangerous is intellectual corruption. It is this that prevents the country from reaching its true potential,” Dr. Rahman stated.

On the issue of local government elections, he noted that Jamaat’s demands stemmed from a desire to ease public suffering, not political opportunism.

He reiterated Jamaat's commitment to building a humane, corruption-free and justice-based state. “To realize the dream of a better Bangladesh, the people must stand with Jamaat,” he concluded.

The gathering was attended by central Jamaat leaders, as well as local leaders from the Sylhet district, city and upazila levels.
