Following a meeting between the Jamaat-e-Islami's ameer, Dr Shafiqur Rahman, and Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus on Monday, the party postponed its protest scheduled for Tuesday evening to demand the release of its leader ATM Azharul Islam.

According to a Jamaat press release, the meeting, held at the State Guest House Jamuna, focused on discussions regarding the overall situation of the country.

The protest had been planned to be a public gathering in front of the Chief Adviser's Office, intended to demand the release of ATM Azharul Islam, who has been sentenced to death for crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.

The party's ameer in a Facebook post had also announced his intention to surrender during the program.

Later, in a separate statement, Jamaat's secretary general, Professor Mia Golam Parwar, announced the postponement of the scheduled program, saying: "Considering the overall situation of the country, the Jamaat-e-Islami has decided to postpone the planned public gathering in front of the Chief Adviser's Office."

He added that at the request of the senior leaders of Jamaat, Shafiqur also agreed to postpone his planned voluntary surrender.
