Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has said that India is reviewing Bangladesh’s request to extradite Sheikh Hasina following her conviction in the July massacre case. However, he noted that the extradition process will begin with former home minister and convicted accused Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.
He made these remarks in a status posted on his verified Facebook account on Friday. Shafiqul Alam wrote that he believes Sheikh Hasina, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and the Awami League leadership, who stand accused over the July events, will one day have to face trial in Bangladeshi courts. India, he added, is already examining Bangladesh’s request for Hasina’s extradition.
He further wrote that although Hasina has powerful supporters, he is increasingly convinced that Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal—widely known as the “Butcher of Dhaka”—will soon be extradited to Bangladesh to face justice. As more information surfaces about crimes committed during Hasina’s nearly 16-year rule, Kamal’s involvement in alleged genocide and enforced disappearances will draw greater attention from global media, he commented.
The press secretary added that no matter how much money Kamal or other Awami League leaders spend, they will not be able to evade accountability forever. If, as a nation, Bangladesh remains steadfast and focused on ensuring justice for the victims of the July massacre and all human rights violations committed during Hasina’s tenure, it will become increasingly difficult for those responsible to escape consequences. “This will begin with Kamal, and then one by one…,” he wrote.
