BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman is not yet a registered voter in Bangladesh, Election Commission (EC) Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said on Monday.
Speaking to reporters in front of his office at the EC headquarters in Agargaon, the senior secretary said that despite not being a listed voter, Tarique may still be able to vote in the upcoming national election and even contest as a candidate—subject to an application and approval from the Commission.
In response to a question from journalists about whether Tarique is currently registered as a voter, Ahmed said, “As far as I know, no.”
When asked if the BNP leader would be eligible to participate in the election, the EC secretary replied, “He can, if the Commission decides so.”
He further clarified that the Voter List Act provides such a provision, allowing an individual to vote or run for office if the Commission permits.
