India is examining Bangladesh’s formal request to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in accordance with its legal and judicial framework, a spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs said Friday.

Speaking at a weekly briefing, Randhir Jaiswal stated, “The request is being examined as part of judicial and internal legal processes. We will continue constructive discussions with all stakeholders and are closely monitoring the matter.”

Sheikh Hasina fled to India on August 5, 2024, following a массов uprising led by students and the public in Bangladesh. Her departure led to tensions in bilateral relations between the two neighboring countries.

However, relations have shown signs of improvement since the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) formed the government in Bangladesh, with both sides expressing interest in strengthening ties. Dhaka recently submitted a formal request to New Delhi seeking Hasina’s extradition.

As part of ongoing diplomatic engagement, Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman visited New Delhi and held meetings with senior Indian officials, including S. Jaishankar, where the extradition issue was raised.

Reaffirming India’s position, Jaiswal noted that New Delhi remains committed to engaging constructively with Bangladesh’s new government and enhancing bilateral relations. He added that both countries have agreed to deepen their partnership and are expected to hold official-level meetings soon to exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest.
