Bangladesh Submarine Cables PLC has announced a 10% reduction in the price of all types of internet bandwidth. The decision was made at the company's board meeting yesterday (22 March), according to a statement issued on Sunday (23 March).

As a result, costs for both mobile internet and broadband services will decrease for service providers.

Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, chief adviser's special assistant for Posts, Telecommunications and ICT, said the government is working to make internet services more affordable.

"Several initiatives have been taken to ensure affordable internet access, with wholesale price reduction being one of the major steps. This decision will reduce the price of bandwidth by 10% at the international gateway level."

Additionally, he said plans are in place to provide DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) facilities to mobile companies at the backbone level, which will reduce their transmission costs by 39%.

"We have already discussed this with telecom operators. It is expected that the operators will pass on this benefit to consumers by reducing internet prices by up to 10%," he added.

Faiz Ahmad also mentioned that by mid-next year, Bangladesh will be connected to the third submarine cable, SEA-ME-WE 6 (South East Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 6).
