National Citizen Party (NCP) Convenor Nahid Islam on Wednesday expressed deep regret over the Dhaka University (DU) administration's failure to organize any official programs marking July 14 and 15, key dates of the July mass uprising.
Speaking as the chief guest at a discussion titled "July in Memoirs: Days of the Revolution," organized by National Chhatrashakti at DU's Muzaffar Ahmed Chowdhury Auditorium, Nahid emphasized that the university must uphold the spirit of July to ensure a democratic environment and institutional accountability.
Nahid highlighted that the July 15, 2024, attack by the Chhatra League on female DU students was a critical turning point that galvanized public support across the nation. The movement later transformed into a full-scale mass uprising following the martyrdom of Abu Sayeed, the symbolic coffin processions, and the active participation of private university and madrasa students. He demanded the immediate arrest of those involved in the July 15 attacks and disciplinary action against complicit teachers, asserting that the post-uprising politics of "New Bangladesh" must center on democracy, equality, and sovereignty.
Expressing frustration over a power outage that delayed the event, Nahid criticized the university's unequal treatment of student groups, noting that while programs of certain political parties enjoy uninterrupted services, others face disruptions. He urged the DU administration to guarantee student welfare, resume regular central students' union (DUCSU) elections, and adopt a transparent, participatory process for appointing Vice-Chancellors.
Regarding national reforms, the NCP convenor criticized the interim government for failing to implement core revolutionary demands, pointing out that key reform ordinances concerning enforced disappearances, the police, and the judiciary had been rescinded, while the government opted for constitutional amendments instead of drafting a new constitution. Addressing the trial of ousted leader Sheikh Hasina, Nahid stated that the period for appealing her verdict has expired, and she should be arrested immediately upon her arrival at the airport to execute the court's judgment. He concluded by reiterating that the July uprising has not failed, and DU must continue to lead the fight against fascism.
