Rumors Swirl Over Possible Resignation of Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin

Speculation has intensified over the possibility that Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin may step down from office, although no official statement has been issued by the President's Office (Bangabhaban).

The rumors began circulating on Wednesday afternoon, prompting widespread discussion in political circles and on social media. Several individuals with knowledge of government and political affairs said they could not independently confirm the claims.

A senior Bangabhaban official told that President Shahabuddin has been dealing with several health complications and that his condition has deteriorated in recent months. According to the official, severe diabetes has been one of his primary health concerns.

The official said the President attended office on Wednesday and is scheduled to participate in several engagements on Thursday. Discussions regarding those official commitments have already taken place.

When asked about reports of a possible resignation, the official said no formal communication had been received. However, the source added that the atmosphere inside Bangabhaban in recent days has suggested "a sense of farewell," indicating what appeared to be quiet preparations, though without confirming any impending decision.

Since the BNP formed the government following its landslide victory in the parliamentary elections held on February 12 this year, political discussions have continued over the possibility of a change in the presidency. Local media and social media users have also speculated about potential candidates who could succeed Shahabuddin.

Several BNP supporters believe a change in the presidency may be imminent. However, senior leaders of the party have reportedly stated that President Shahabuddin still has a significant portion of his constitutional term remaining, meaning there is currently no constitutional basis for a presidential election.

Mohammed Shahabuddin assumed office as Bangladesh's President on April 24, 2023, for a five-year term that is due to expire in April 2028. Constitutional experts note that, unless he resigns, is impeached, or is otherwise removed from office through the procedures set out in the Constitution, there is no legal provision for electing a new president before the end of his term.
