Bangladesh Parliament Speaker Assumes Duties as Acting President Following Shahabuddin's Resignation

Bangladesh Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed has assumed the responsibilities of Acting President following the resignation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin, and will serve in the role until a new president is elected.

The Cabinet Division issued a gazette notification on Friday stating that, under Article 54 of the Constitution, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Bir Bikram, will discharge the functions of the President after Mohammed Shahabuddin stepped down from office on July 24, 2026.

The notification said the order takes immediate effect.

President Shahabuddin resigned on Friday, citing health reasons. In accordance with the Constitution, the Speaker assumed the office of Acting President until the election of a new head of state.

Meanwhile, Shayrul Kabir Khan, a member of the BNP Media Cell, said Acting President Hafiz Uddin Ahmed is scheduled to begin his official engagements on Sunday.

According to the schedule, he will place a wreath at the National Martyrs' Memorial in Savar at 11:30 a.m. to pay tribute to the country's fallen heroes. He will later visit Sher-e-Bangla Nagar at 12:30 p.m., where he is expected to pay homage at the graves of former President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, and offer prayers.
