Japanese investors have announced plans for an initial investment of $1.2 billion in Bangladesh’s tourism sector, signaling Japan’s interest in strengthening economic cooperation with the country.
The announcement came at a meeting between Japanese investor representatives and Bangladeshi officials on Sunday at the conference room of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism. Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M. Rashiduzzaman Millat attended the meeting as the chief guest.
Addressing the meeting, Millat said Bangladesh offers diverse tourism opportunities, combining natural beauty, heritage and cultural attractions.
He highlighted the Sundarbans, the world’s largest mangrove forest; Cox’s Bazar, known for its extensive natural sandy beach; and the tea gardens of Sylhet as some of the country’s major tourism assets.
The minister said the government welcomes foreign investment in the tourism industry and is committed to creating opportunities for international investors.
“Japan is a longstanding friend of Bangladesh and has contributed to the development of several important infrastructure projects in the country,” Millat said. He added that the government was ready to extend the necessary support to Japanese investors interested in developing Bangladesh’s tourism sector.
Millat said the government intends to pursue a mutually beneficial approach to foreign investment through public-private partnership (PPP) models.
Welcoming the Japanese investors’ interest, the minister said the government would take prompt action once their investment proposal was formally submitted.
He also said the Bangladesh Tourism Board would arrange visits to potential tourism destinations for the Japanese investor delegation as soon as possible.
The proposed investment is expected to open opportunities for greater cooperation between Bangladesh and Japan in tourism development. However, further details regarding the proposed projects, investment timeline and allocation of funds were not provided in the announcement.
