NEWS DESKBangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has said that three conditions must be fulfilled before the next election is held. These are: reforms, trial of fascists, and a proper electoral system. He made these remarks at a press conference held today (Thursday) at Hotel Westin in the capital’s Gulshan area, regarding his recent visit to the European Union.
He said, “The conditions for the election, including fundamental reforms and coexistence(of political parties), must be fulfilled. Otherwise, only Allah knows whether the commitment to holding the election will remain intact.”
The Jamaat Ameer said, “The February 2026 timeline for the election is not too difficult. The election may take place before or after that, if the conditions are met. All political parties should assist the government in the reform process. The sooner they (political parties) coordinate with the government, the sooner the election can be held.”
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman added, “If there is no cooperation and a typical election is held, it will be like the previous ones. In that case, the political parties will have to bear the responsibility.”
Addressing the political parties, he said, “Thirdly, there must be mutual respect among the political parties. We need to move away from the mindset that an election is fair only if I win, and unfair if I lose. Everyone's engagement is necessary to overcome this.”
Speaking about his recent tour of several European countries, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman mentioned that during the visit, they met with BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and Acting Chairperson Tarique Rahman. However, no formal discussions were held-they only visited to inquire about Khaleda Zia’s health.
