The death toll from a fire that broke out at a multi-storey shopping mall on MA Jinnah Road in Pakistan’s Karachi has risen to 26, as rescue workers recovered two more bodies on Monday, including that of a child. Authorities said many people remain trapped inside the building.

Rescue officials reported that around 69 people are still missing. Fire brigade personnel said rescue operations on the first floor of the building have been completed, while teams have begun entering the second floor to continue search efforts.

Deputy Inspector General (South) Asad Raza said six bodies have been identified so far, adding that the remaining victims can only be identified through DNA testing. He confirmed that 69 people are currently listed as missing.

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab visited the site and said 18 bodies had been identified, while approximately 65 people were still unaccounted for, highlighting discrepancies as rescue operations continue.

Large crowds gathered around the damaged building, with some attempting to enter the debris. Protesters demanded justice for the victims and accountability for the incident.

The fire burned for more than 24 hours, severely hampering rescue efforts in the densely populated area. Firefighters said poor ventilation inside the building caused thick smoke to spread rapidly, slowing access to those trapped inside.
