Beijing has issued a forceful rebuttal to the United States following threats of sanctions against two Chinese banks over alleged financial dealings with Iran. On Thursday (April 16), China condemned the move as entirely illegal, asserting that it will not recognize or adhere to any unilateral sanctions not authorized by the United Nations Security Council.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that Beijing vehemently opposes "secondary sanctions" and unilateral pressure tactics. This follows a statement from U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who warned that the United States is prepared to take action if these banks are found facilitating Iranian transactions.
The tension comes amid a naval blockade by the United States in the Strait of Hormuz, which threatens to disrupt China's energy imports. Following a stalemate in recent talks in Pakistan, the United States has continued to intensify its economic and maritime pressure on Iran’s oil industry.
