A powerful earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale has struck northern Japan, prompting tsunami warnings across multiple coastal regions, including Iwate Prefecture, Aomori Prefecture, and Hokkaido.

The earthquake, recorded at a depth of around 10 kilometers near the coast of Iwate, was felt as far as Tokyo, where buildings reportedly swayed for several minutes. Japan’s Meteorological Agency warned that tsunami waves of up to three meters could hit affected areas.

According to reports from Japan Times, television broadcasters urged residents to move away from rivers and coastal zones to higher ground. Public broadcaster NHK issued emergency English alerts on screen, including messages such as “Tsunami! Evacuate!” and “Don’t turn back.”

A tsunami wave of about 40 centimeters has already been recorded at Miyako Port in Iwate, with more waves expected. Authorities also warned that tsunami activity could reach ports such as Tokachi and Erimo in Hokkaido, as well as Hachinohe in Aomori.

NHK reported tsunami detection even up to 60 kilometers off the coasts of Iwate and Aomori, indicating imminent coastal impact. Live footage from Kuji Port showed ships rocking due to incoming waves.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi urged residents to evacuate to safe and elevated areas, stating that authorities are still assessing damage and preparing further emergency responses.

Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force deployed an SH-60K helicopter for damage assessment and rescue support. Rail services, including the Tohoku Shinkansen and Akita Shinkansen lines operated by Shinkansen, have been temporarily suspended due to safety concerns.
