The repatriation of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be determined strictly in accordance with the provisions of the existing bilateral extradition treaty, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated.
Addressing journalists during the ministry's weekly briefing yesterday, MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal reaffirmed that India's policy remains unchanged and any extradition process must follow established legal pathways and judicial regulations.
The development follows an official request dispatched by the Bangladesh government to New Delhi seeking Hasina's extradition, to which India previously responded that it was examining the legal dimensions of the matter. While Jaiswal declined to comment on whether any fresh diplomatic dialogues have taken place with Dhaka regarding the issue, Sheikh Hasina recently disclosed in interviews with international media outlets that she intends to return to Bangladesh within this year.
Elaborating on the situation, senior MEA officials stated that Sheikh Hasina is currently residing in India as an honored guest and is entirely free to return if she chooses to do so. Officials confirmed that the Indian government will facilitate necessary travel documents should she require them for her journey via air or land. They reiterated that New Delhi places no restrictions on her movement and will permit her to travel whenever and wherever she desires.
