Trump Says He Discussed Compensation for Canadian Wildfire Smoke with PM Carney

US President Donald Trump said he spoke with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during the FIFA World Cup final and raised the issue of wildfire smoke from Canada drifting into the United States, demanding compensation.

According to AFP, Trump told reporters after returning to Washington on Sunday that he had a good relationship with Carney but said the wildfires in the region needed to be brought under control.

“If we can help them, we will,” Trump said. “But perhaps they should pay us some compensation, or we could impose tariffs on them.”

Earlier, Trump had threatened to impose new tariffs on Canada amid concerns that wildfire smoke could affect the FIFA World Cup final.

Dense smoke from wildfires in Canada and northern Minnesota spread across parts of the northeastern United States, causing air quality to reach unhealthy levels in several areas. Authorities subsequently issued health advisories.
