Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega Announces Permanent End to Elections to Block Opposition

In an unprecedented move to consolidate absolute power, Nicaragua's long-serving authoritarian President Daniel Ortega has announced that no further elections will be held in the Central American nation.

The 80-year-old leader stated that the decision aims to permanently block opposition parties from attempting to claim state power, alongside plans to enact new legislation strictly curbing political dissent.

According to a report by The Guardian, Ortega delivered the announcement during a public address marking the 47th anniversary of the 1979 Sandinista Revolution. Speaking before thousands of state employees, he vowed to collaborate with the National Assembly to erect a legislative "wall" that bars those he characterized as "coup plotters" and "traitors" from taking office.

While it remains unclear whether the national elections scheduled for next year will be canceled outright or restricted to a single-party ballot, political analysts regard the move as a transition toward a full-fledged family dictatorship under Ortega and his wife, Co-President Rosario Murillo.
