Brazil Condemns New U.S. Tariffs Over Forced Labor Allegations, Plans Retaliatory Measures

Brazil has strongly criticized the United States' decision to impose new tariffs on imports from 60 countries, including Brazil, over allegations that they have failed to take adequate measures to combat forced labor.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Brazilian government described the move as "arbitrary" and "unjustified," accusing Washington of using human rights and labor rights as political tools to advance its protectionist trade agenda.

Under the new U.S. measures, Brazilian exports will face an additional 12.5% tariff, which is scheduled to take effect on Friday.

Brazil said it would immediately begin the process of adopting reciprocal measures under the country's Reciprocity Law. The government also announced plans to challenge the U.S. action through the World Trade Organization's (WTO) dispute settlement mechanism.

The United States has argued that the affected countries have not taken sufficient steps to enforce laws prohibiting forced labor. Based on those findings, Washington imposed the new tariffs on dozens of countries, including Brazil.

The latest measures come a week after the Trump administration separately imposed an additional 25% tariff on several Brazilian products, alleging that Brazil was engaged in unfair trade practices.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said negotiations with the United States remain an option. However, he warned that if talks fail to produce a satisfactory outcome, Brazil will seek alternative international markets for its exports.
