A glass bottle was thrown at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s motorcade near Jerusalem’s Mahane Yehuda Market on Thursday night as he travelled to celebrate his 77th birthday. The convoy did not stop, while security personnel immediately crossed barricades in an attempt to locate the suspect.

According to The Jerusalem Post, Netanyahu and his wife, Sara Netanyahu, were welcomed by supporters of his Likud party when they arrived at Mahane Yehuda Market.

Earlier, however, Netanyahu faced angry protests during a visit to Tel Aviv’s Hatikva Market. In one incident, a man attempted to film himself questioning Netanyahu about payments to Hamas. Likud supporters allegedly knocked his phone away and shoved him during the confrontation.

The protests included relatives of people killed or taken hostage during the Hamas-led October 7 attacks. Among those present were Michel Iluz, the father of slain hostage Guy Iluz; Gil Dickmann, a cousin of Carmel Gat; and Einav Zangauker, the mother of hostage Matan Zangauker.

The protesters called on Netanyahu to resign, holding him responsible for the failures surrounding the October 7 attacks and the hostage crisis.

Einav Zangauker said the protesters were subjected to abusive treatment, spat at and pelted with vegetables. She added that police subsequently removed them from the scene.

Michel Iluz strongly condemned the reported attack on the protesters and urged Israeli citizens to make the right decision in the upcoming elections.

The incidents highlight the continuing political tensions surrounding Netanyahu, with disputes over the October 7 attacks, the handling of the hostage crisis and his government’s policies continuing to fuel public demonstrations.
