The Libyan Red Crescent Society suspects that 20 bodies recovered from the Mediterranean Sea off the Libyan coast may be all those of Bangladeshi nationals.

In a statement on Saturday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka expressed concern over the incident, citing information from the Bangladesh Embassy in Libya.

All 20 dead individuals have been buried as the bodies were in a decomposed state, the ministry said.

The nationalities of the deceased have not been identified yet although the local Red Crescent believes all of them are Bangladesh nationals, according to the statement.

According to the Bangladesh mission in Libya, the tragedy occurred in an area controlled by Libya’s eastern government, based in Benghazi. The deceased migrants were reportedly not carrying any identification documents.

The embassy has not yet received permission to visit the site.

"The embassy has come to know through various sources that several bodies of migrants have been recovered from the Brega coast in the past two days," a post from the official Facebook page of Bangladesh Embassy said.

The bodies washed ashore on the Brega coast after a boat carrying migrants sank in the Mediterranean Sea.

While the embassy has yet to confirm whether all the deceased were Bangladeshi nationals, multiple sources—including local rescuers—fear that they may be.

The mission has initiated efforts to send a team to the site to gather more information about the casualties.
