Russia has demanded an urgent and immediate explanation from the United States over its claim that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has been detained and removed from the country.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Russia’s Foreign Ministry expressed deep concern over the rapidly unfolding situation. The ministry said it was alarmed by reports that, during what it described as an aggressive US operation, President Maduro and his wife were forcibly taken out of Venezuela.

Moscow called on Washington to provide immediate clarification regarding the circumstances surrounding the alleged detention. The statement emphasized that such action against the leader of a sovereign state is unacceptable under international law.

“Respect for the sovereignty of independent states is one of the fundamental principles of international law,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said, adding that what reportedly happened to President Maduro represents a direct violation of that principle.

Earlier, Russia had strongly condemned the incident, describing the US action as an act of “armed aggression” against Venezuela.

The situation continues to fuel international concern, as conflicting claims and escalating diplomatic tensions raise questions about legality, sovereignty, and regional stability.
