NEWS DESKPresident Donald Trump's administration is moving forward with plans to change the name of the Department of Defense (the Pentagon) to "Department of War," after Trump proposed this idea earlier this week. A White House Official has recently quoted.
According to the official, restoring the old name for the largest department in the U.S. government may require legislative intervention from Congress, but the White House is exploring alternative ways to implement the change.
He told that Republican Congressman Greg Steube from Florida has introduced an amendment to the annual defense policy bill aimed at changing the name, indicating some Republican support for the idea within Congress.
White House spokesperson Anna Kelly stated: "As President Trump said, our military needs to focus on offense, not just defense, which is why he prioritized fighters at the Pentagon instead of focusing on diversity, equality, and inclusion.. Stay tuned."
Trump had told reporters in the Oval Office last Monday that "Department of War" sounds better than "Department of Defense," adding, "It used to be called the Department of War, and it had a stronger ring to it.. We want defense, but we want offense too."
It is noted that the U.S. Department of War transitioned to the Department of Defense gradually after the National Security Act of 1947 was passed, which unified the Army, Navy, and Air Force under one organization, the "National Military Establishment." In 1949, the law was amended to officially adopt the name "Department of Defense," which remains in effect to this day.
