President Donald Trump has warned the BRICS nations that he will slap a 150% tariff and stop trade with them if they choose to use a currency other than the US dollar. The warning was issued Thursday at a Republican Governors Association gathering in Washington, D.C.
Trump charged the BRICS countries for trying to weaken dollar by launching a new currency, potentially the Chinese yuan. But as of yet, the BRICS nations have not released an official statement in reaction to Trump's comments.
In an effort to lessen their dependency on the dollar, the BRICS countries—Brazil, China, India, Russia, and South Africa—proposed a unified currency in 2023, which sparked open hostilities between the US and the group.
Additionally, Trump made fun of Canada by saying that it imports 95% of its goods, including gas and oil, from the United States, making it the 51st state. He proposed that the national anthem of Canada might be used as the anthem of the 51st state of the United States in a future agreement.
Additionally, Trump promised improvements to the U.S. education system, claiming it would soon rival those of Norway, Denmark, and Sweden.
