The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump believes Europe could become “unrecognizable” within the next 20 years — or even sooner. The warning appears in a new national security strategy the administration has prepared for the United States. The 33-page document, published in November, outlines “America’s view of the world,” including how the country intends to use its military and economi

According to a BBC report published Friday, 5 December, the strategy cautions that Europe is facing “civilizational extinction.” It states that the continent has a “real and increasingly visible possibility of civilizational collapse” within two decades — a prospect that has “shocked” Washington.

The document questions whether several European states will remain reliable allies under these circumstances. It places particular focus on the continent, assigning blame for an impending “Western crisis” to the European Union and immigration policies.

The strategy argues that activities of the EU and other multinational bodies undermine political freedom and national sovereignty. It says Europe’s immigration policies are fueling internal conflict, while restrictions on free speech, suppression of political opposition, declining birth rates, and erosion of national identity and confidence deepen the crisis.

Trump described the strategy as a “roadmap,” intended to preserve the United States as “the greatest and most successful nation in human history.”

The document has sparked political reactions across Europe. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul dismissed Washington’s warnings, saying, “Germany does not need outside advice.”

Every U.S. administration typically releases one national security strategy per term, setting the framework for future policies, budgets, and international priorities. The new document echoes Trump’s recent speech at the United Nations, where he sharply criticized Western Europe’s immigration and clean-energy policies.

It warns that if current trends continue, Europe will become unrecognizable in 20 years or less, with worsening economic problems driven by “civilizational decline.” It also raises doubts about whether some European economies and militaries will remain strong enough to serve as dependable U.S. allies.

The strategy further accuses the EU and other transnational groups of weakening sovereignty, adds that European immigration policies fuel conflict, and cites concerns about censorship, declining birth rates, and erosion of national identity. However, it views the rise of patriotic political movements in Europe as a positive development.

Referring to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the document claims Europe suffers from a “crisis of confidence” in its approach to Moscow. It stresses that the United States must play a major role in managing Europe’s relationship with Russia and says ending the war in Ukraine is central to America’s national interests.
