An Indian-origin pilot was killed in a tragic helicopter crash in the U.S. state of Georgia just hours after his wedding ceremony. The victim, Dave Fizi, 26, was a pilot for Delta Air Lines and belonged to a family with roots in the Indian state of Kerala.
According to local media reports, Dave married his longtime partner, Jesni, on Friday in a family-organized ceremony attended by around 400 guests. The wedding took place at a venue in Dawsonville, Georgia, after the couple had known each other for nearly a decade.
Following the wedding reception, the newlyweds boarded a Robinson R66 helicopter for what was intended to be a special departure. They planned to spend the night at a hotel in downtown Atlanta before beginning their married life together.
However, shortly after takeoff, the helicopter crashed into a wooded area near Mount Vernon Drive in Dawson County, not far from the wedding venue.
Dave’s father, George Fizi, described his son as “very happy” on his wedding day. He said the couple first met nearly ten years ago at New Testament Church and had maintained a close relationship ever since.
Authorities reportedly took several hours to locate the crash site. During that time, Jesni remained trapped in the wreckage for nearly six hours. She survived the accident but suffered multiple cuts and injuries.
According to George Fizi, Jesni later recounted that when she regained consciousness, she found Dave lying across her chest. As a nurse, she quickly realized he had not survived.
“His body was cold and covered in blood,” George said, recalling what Jesni had told him.
The grieving father also revealed that Dave had expressed concerns about the weather before the flight. As an experienced professional pilot, he reportedly warned the helicopter pilot that visibility was extremely poor and that flying under such conditions would normally be considered unsafe.
However, the helicopter pilot reportedly assured him that the situation could be managed by flying at a higher altitude.
The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched an investigation into the crash. The exact cause of the accident has not yet been determined.
The tragedy has shocked family members, friends, and the local community, turning what was meant to be a joyous celebration into a devastating loss.
