U.S. authorities expect the long-promised southern border wall championed by President Donald Trump to be completed by the end of 2027, according to senior border officials.

Speaking at an event hosted by the Center for Immigration Studies in Washington on Tuesday, Rodney Scott, Commissioner of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection, said the reinforced steel barrier under construction along the U.S.-Mexico border will stretch from San Diego to the Gulf of Mexico.

However, Scott noted that certain areas where authorities believe a wall is unnecessary will remain without physical barriers.

“The primary border wall construction will be completed by the end of 2027,” Scott said, adding that several sections of the project are still under development.

He explained that wall construction has been intentionally excluded from a limited number of locations where natural geography already serves as a significant obstacle.

“We have made conscious decisions not to build a wall in places where it is not needed,” Scott said. “One example is Big Bend National Park, which is an extremely remote area with steep and rugged terrain.”

In addition to the physical barrier, authorities plan to install electronic surveillance systems and other advanced technological equipment along the border. Scott said these upgrades could be completed by July or, at the latest, August 2028.

A separate physical barrier system will also be maintained along extensive sections of the Rio Grande in Texas. The river forms roughly 1,900 kilometers of the international boundary between the United States and Mexico.

The border wall project is intended to curb illegal immigration and drug trafficking from Mexico into the United States.

According to official indicators, both illegal border crossings and drug-smuggling activities have declined in recent years. However, Scott acknowledged that a physical wall alone cannot completely eliminate unlawful cross-border activities, emphasizing the importance of surveillance technology and broader enforcement measures.

The project remains one of the most prominent and controversial elements of U.S. border security policy, a central issue in American political debate for more than a decade.
