A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Mexico's southern Pacific coast on Friday morning, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning for coastal areas.

The earthquake was confirmed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), which said the tremor occurred at 8:48 a.m. local time. According to the agency, the epicenter was located approximately 10 kilometers north of the affected area.

USGS said the earthquake originated near the port of Puerto Madero in Mexico's Chiapas state, close to the country's border with Guatemala.

Following the quake, authorities issued a tsunami warning for coastal regions as a precaution against possible sea surges. There were no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage.

Officials are continuing to monitor the situation, and further assessments are expected as emergency response teams evaluate the impact of the earthquake.
