Trump’s New ‘Air Force One’ Sent Back for Upgrades Amid Security Concerns

The euphoria surrounding the United States’ new “Air Force One” lasted barely two and a half weeks. After a political and security drama surrounding the aircraft, the plane is now set to return to the maintenance and upgrade facility.

The story began with a spectacular gift from Qatar’s royal family. The royal Boeing 747-8, valued at $400 million, was reportedly transformed into a flying White House at an additional cost of around $400 million.

On June 19, while viewing the aircraft’s design at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, President Donald Trump expressed his admiration, claiming that no one had ever seen an aircraft as luxurious as the new presidential jet. The aircraft made its first presidential trip on July 1, when Trump flew to North Dakota.

However, security and confidentiality concerns soon overshadowed the excitement. Just eight days after the aircraft was added to the presidential fleet, Trump abruptly abandoned the new plane and boarded the older Air Force One while returning from Turkey after a NATO meeting.

At the time, speculation began circulating about an alleged Iranian conspiracy. The following day, an explosive report by The New York Times revealed that the new flying palace lacked several critical technologies, including a missile defence system. CNN later reported that a number of standard features had also been omitted in the rush to prepare the aircraft.

Rather than acknowledge the reported shortcomings, Trump reacted angrily to the publication of the reports. White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and FBI Director Kash Patel launched an investigation to identify the sources of the leaked information. Officials were reportedly instructed to surrender their personal phones, while subpoenas were sent to the homes of four New York Times journalists.

After weeks of controversy and speculation, however, the president himself acknowledged on Sunday that the aircraft would undergo maintenance.

Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews after returning from New Jersey, where he had attended the FIFA World Cup final, Trump said the new Air Force One would be grounded within the next month for a major modernisation programme.

Rather than waiting until the scheduled replacement period in 2028 or later, the aircraft was hastily converted into a presidential plane after being gifted by Qatar. The upcoming overhaul may now be the price the White House is paying for the shortcomings created in that rushed process.
