American Secretary of State Marco Rubio has identified Iran as the primary driver of instability and the main "troublemaker" in the Middle East.
Rubio made the statements while addressing reporters regarding ongoing discussions between American and Saudi officials concerning threats posed by Yemen's Houthi rebels to commercial shipping in the critical Bab al-Mandab Strait. He noted that Washington and Riyadh have engaged in multiple high-level consultations over the past week to address these maritime security risks in the Red Sea.
The top American diplomat stated that Tehran remains directly embedded at the center of the regional turmoil. Rubio highlighted Iran's extensive backing of proxy groups, including the Houthis in Yemen, Hezbollah in Lebanon, armed militias in Iraq, and Hamas in Palestine. He criticized the Iranian regime for squandering its national resources on destabilizing militant networks across the region rather than directing those funds toward the welfare of its own citizens.
