U.S. Imposes New Tariffs on Imports From 60 Countries, Including Bangladesh

The United States has imposed new tariffs on imports from 60 countries, including Bangladesh, citing concerns over inadequate enforcement of measures to prevent forced labor.

The Trump administration announced additional tariffs of 10% and 12.5%, replacing the temporary 10% global tariff that had been in effect for the past 150 days.

The new measures were published in the Federal Register on Thursday.

According to the notice, the tariffs will apply to 99.4% of U.S. imports. However, a wide range of products—including oil and gas, fertilizers, and certain food items—have been exempted from the new duties.

According to a Reuters report, the move follows a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in February that struck down President Donald Trump's proposed "reciprocal" tariffs ranging from 10% to 50%, which had been introduced as part of efforts to reduce the country's trade deficit.

Following that ruling, the Trump administration imposed a temporary 10% global tariff for 150 days while developing a revised tariff framework. With that temporary measure set to expire at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, the newly announced country-specific tariffs will take effect immediately afterward.

The Federal Register notice also states that goods already in transit before 12:01 a.m. on July 28 will be exempt from the new tariff rates.
