US Officials Warn Trump Over Risks of Prolonging Iran Conflict

U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine have expressed concerns about continuing the war with Iran, warning President Donald Trump about the risks of prolonging the conflict.

The concerns were raised during a high-level meeting at the White House on Friday as Trump was reviewing options for expanding military strikes against Iran.

General Caine specifically warned the president about potential shortages of ammunition and missiles needed by the U.S. military. He said the armed forces were capable of carrying out any operation ordered by the president, but a prolonged conflict and expanded strikes could negatively affect overall military readiness.

Following the meeting, the United States temporarily halted further attacks after nearly two weeks of continuous strikes. Officials said concerns over depleted weapons stockpiles and the possibility of the conflict escalating beyond control contributed to the decision not to launch additional strikes on Iran on Friday night.

White House Communications Director Steven Cheung said in a statement that President Trump has always prioritized that after 13 days of intense attacks and severe a diplomatic solution. However, he said all military options remain available if Iran continues activities targeting the Strait of Hormuz or U.S. allies.

Cheung added that after 13 days of intense attacks and severe economic sanctions, Iran should return to the negotiating table and reach an agreement.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Trump said U.S. officials were actively engaged in talks with Iran. He said Tehran appeared to be becoming more serious about negotiations, but warned that the United States remained prepared to intensify or resume military action if talks failed.

Reports indicate that the Trump administration is still reviewing options for expanding military operations. Meanwhile, Gulf countries have urged Washington to avoid extreme measures and exercise restraint.

Questions also remain among Trump's advisers over whether airstrikes alone can achieve the desired outcome without deploying ground forces. Some officials have warned that a ground operation could create even greater risks and complications.
