US Restricts Officials’ Movement in Mexico’s Nogales Over Security Threat

The United States has imposed new restrictions on the official activities and movement of its personnel in Nogales, a border city in northern Mexico, citing concerns over potential security threats.

Under the new measures, US government personnel in the city are permitted to travel only during daylight hours and only when necessary, according to a Sunday report by Anadolu Agency.

The US Mission in Mexico said in a statement that American citizens were being alerted to potential threats and that security measures in the area had been adjusted.

However, US authorities did not provide details about the nature of the threat or the intelligence behind the decision.

The mission also urged US citizens in Nogales to exercise increased caution, remain aware of their surroundings and seek safe shelter in the event of an incident. They were further advised to follow instructions from Mexican law enforcement authorities.

Nogales, located in Mexico’s Sonora state, is a major border crossing point between Mexico and the United States. The city has long faced challenges linked to organized crime, smuggling and sporadic violence.

The Mexican city lies directly south of the US state of Arizona, while New Mexico is located to the northeast.

The US State Department currently lists Sonora under Level 3: Reconsider Travel in its travel advisory system, urging travelers to reconsider visiting the state because of security concerns.
