A tragic incident unfolded during a youth football match in Wichita, Kansas, when a woman allegedly drove a truck onto the playing field, killing a child and a 35-year-old man and injuring at least 11 others.

The injured victims, whose ages range from 5 to 68, were taken to hospitals in critical condition, according to local authorities.

The incident occurred on Saturday, Wichita Police Captain Aaron Moses said. Police have taken the 34-year-old female truck driver into custody.

Authorities have not yet determined whether the truck entering the field was a deliberate act. Investigators are working to establish how and why the incident occurred, Moses said.

Police also reported that two children were inside the truck at the time of the incident.

Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan praised people at the scene for their immediate response, saying they intervened to stop the driver and help the injured before emergency responders arrived.

He commended the community members for their efforts to save lives, describing their actions as an extraordinary demonstration of the compassion and humanity of Wichita residents.

Authorities said the situation was under control and that there was no further threat to the public.

Wichita Mayor Lily Wu described the incident as heartbreaking and urged members of the public to avoid the area around the scene while the investigation continues.

In a message posted on Facebook, Wu expressed her condolences to the families of those killed and injured, offering particular sympathy to the children affected by the incident and their families.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash remains ongoing.
