The US Department of Defense, known as the Pentagon, released a new batch of documents related to unidentified flying objects (UFOs) on Friday, including an account by two senior military observers who reported seeing a mysterious black triangular object moving at extraordinary speed over a sensitive facility in the western United States earlier this year.

According to a report by The Guardian, the object reportedly displayed none of the characteristics of conventional military aircraft and suddenly disappeared without a sound within seconds. The observers said there was no smoke or vapour trail, nor any other visible indication of its presence.

The two individuals, who reportedly have extensive experience working with government agencies, were not identified. The location of the incident was also withheld in the documents made public on Friday.

The Guardian reported that the release was part of hundreds of documents the Pentagon has made public since May, following US President Donald Trump's pledge to release classified records concerning UFOs.

However, much of the information in the documents remains unclear, with several sections heavily redacted. While some other cases included actual photographs or video footage, the report on this incident featured nine copies of an image of the same ravine, with small triangular shapes superimposed to illustrate the object's alleged flight path.

Greg Eghigian, a professor of history and bioethics at Pennsylvania State University and author of the 2024 book After the Flying Saucers Came: A Global History of the UFO Phenomenon, questioned the evidentiary value of the images.

He said the material appeared to show little more than a small black triangular shape placed over a landscape, apparently to help illustrate the report.

Eghigian added that he did not believe the image contributed any significant new information to the substance of the report.
