The Speaker of the National Parliament, Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, has officially recognized Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman as the Leader of the Opposition and the party’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher as the Deputy Leader of the Opposition.
The information was confirmed in a notification issued on Thursday by the Parliament Secretariat, signed by Secretary Kaniz Mowla.
According to the notification, under Rule 2(1)(t) of the Rules of Procedure of the Bangladesh National Parliament, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has been recognized as the Leader of the Opposition as he heads the party or alliance that holds the highest number of seats opposing the government in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad.
In the same notification, it was stated that Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher has been recognized as the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in accordance with the Leader and Deputy Leader of the Opposition (Remuneration and Privileges) Act, 2021.
Under the law, the Speaker of Parliament is responsible for formally recognizing the Leader and Deputy Leader of the Opposition.
On February 17, the Jamaat-led opposition alliance nominated Dr. Shafiqur Rahman as the Leader of the Opposition and Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher as the Deputy Leader. However, the formal recognition could not be given at that time due to the absence of a Speaker.
Earlier on Thursday, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed was elected Speaker during the parliamentary session. Following his election, he formally granted recognition to the Leader and Deputy Leader of the Opposition.
