Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has stated that it will pursue effective steps to implement the ‘July Charter’ from within parliament, rejecting calls for resignation. The party also warned that if necessary, it will take to the streets against individuals who betray the charter.

The statement was made on Friday by Saiful Alam Milon, a member of Jamaat’s executive council and MP for Dhaka-12, following a meeting with representatives of the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) at the party’s Dhaka office.

Milon said the meeting focused on ways to make parliament more effective and strong, and IFES offered guidance and recommendations, including on the training of MPs.

He alleged that the ruling party is attempting to annul the referendum ordinance by exploiting its parliamentary majority. He added that discussions also covered the implementation of the July Charter and the broader context of the national referendum.

Milon further criticized the government, saying that in parliamentary democracy, the prime minister is expected to respond to opposition leaders, but in practice, this does not happen. The prime minister’s silence and delegation of responses to others, he said, undermines the essence of democratic practice.
