Bangladesh’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Shama Obaed Islam, has expressed hope that those responsible for the brutal killing of two Bangladeshi students in Florida will be brought to justice through a proper investigation.

Speaking to journalists at the Foreign Ministry on Sunday, she described the incident as “deeply tragic,” noting that the body of the male student has been recovered, while the female student remains missing.

The victims—Jamil Ahmed Limon and Nahida Sultana Brishti—were PhD students at the University of South Florida. The killings were allegedly carried out by a former student of the same university.

The minister said Bangladesh is maintaining close communication with its mission in Washington, as well as with the US Department of State, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and other relevant authorities.

Shama Obaed Islam added that she has spoken with both families and assured them of all possible support from the Bangladesh government.

Regarding the repatriation of Limon’s body, she said it would be returned to Bangladesh as soon as autopsy and other legal procedures are completed. The Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare is assisting in this regard, she added, and similar support will be extended in the other case.

She expressed hope that US authorities will conduct a thorough investigation and ensure accountability for the killings.

Responding to another question, the minister said Bangladesh expects its vessels, including the MV Banglar Joyjatra, to safely navigate the Strait of Hormuz.

On a separate note regarding her recent Africa visit, she said Bangladesh may explore energy cooperation opportunities with Senegal and Angola, while also working to strengthen broader ties with the two nations.
