BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has reiterated that his party supports amending Bangladesh's Constitution rather than undertaking a complete constitutional reform, saying the BNP has consistently maintained this position.
Speaking at a memorial event at the National Press Club on Friday, Fakhrul said the current political debate has focused on constitutional reform and amendment, but stressed that the BNP has always advocated constitutional amendments.
"Many of those in the opposition are making sensational statements in an attempt to excite the public," he said. "But no one understands the situation better than the people themselves. They are best placed to decide what we have actually said regarding constitutional amendments."
The BNP leader also said the party had received a public mandate based on its election manifesto.
"The people voted for us on the basis of the commitments outlined in our manifesto. With a two-thirds majority, the BNP has been entrusted with the responsibility of governing the state. Therefore, I do not believe there is any room for confusion on this issue," he said.
Fakhrul made the remarks at a memorial meeting organized jointly by the Professor Emajuddin Ahmed Research Centre and the National Journalists' Association to mark the sixth death anniversary of Professor Emajuddin Ahmed.
The event concluded with a special prayer seeking eternal peace for the late academic.
