China is seriously considering the possibility of introducing its high-speed rail technology in Bangladesh, potentially paving the way for bullet train services on key routes such as Dhaka–Chattogram, Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen said on Saturday.
Speaking as the special guest at a seminar organized by the Bangladesh-China Friendship Association at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka, Yao said Beijing remains committed to strengthening long-term cooperation with Bangladesh in infrastructure, trade, connectivity, and regional stability.
The event was attended by Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the chief guest.
High-Speed Rail and Connectivity
Addressing prospects for transport cooperation, Yao said China is exploring the application of its high-speed rail technology in Bangladesh. If implemented, future bullet train services could operate on major routes, including the Dhaka–Chattogram corridor.
He also noted that work on the Bangladesh-China-Myanmar Economic Corridor (BCMEC) is progressing, describing it as an important platform for enhancing regional connectivity and economic cooperation.
Bilateral Relations at a Historic High
The ambassador said relations between Bangladesh and China are currently at one of their strongest points in history, adding that recent high-level exchanges have further reinforced the two countries' strategic partnership.
According to Yao, China remains committed to providing long-term support for Bangladesh's development across key sectors, including infrastructure, trade, transportation, and regional cooperation.
Support for the Teesta Master Plan
Yao reaffirmed China's willingness to support the implementation of the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project.
He said feasibility studies are moving forward and that Beijing is prepared to provide the necessary technical and financial assistance. The project, he added, is expected to improve water management, agricultural productivity, and environmental sustainability in northern Bangladesh.
Chinese Market Opens to Bangladeshi Jackfruit
The ambassador also highlighted expanding agricultural trade between the two countries.
He said a protocol signed during the Bangladeshi prime minister's recent visit to China will allow fresh Bangladeshi jackfruit to enter the Chinese market. Following the export of Bangladeshi mangoes, the agreement is expected to create new opportunities for the country's agricultural sector by giving its national fruit access to China's vast consumer market.
China to Continue Mediation on Rohingya Repatriation
On the Rohingya crisis, Yao said the evolving political situation in Myanmar presents new opportunities for dialogue.
He said China will continue to play a mediating role between Bangladesh and Myanmar to help advance discussions and support a sustainable solution for the voluntary repatriation of displaced Rohingya refugees.
