U.S. Special Envoy Sergio Gor Arrives in Dhaka on Three-Day Visit

U.S. Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Sergio Gor has arrived in Dhaka on a three-day official visit, marking his first trip to Bangladesh since assuming the role.

The U.S. Embassy in Dhaka confirmed on Thursday that Gor had arrived in the capital.

In a statement, U.S. Ambassador Brent Christensen welcomed the envoy, saying, “I am pleased to welcome my friend, U.S. Special Envoy for South and Central Asia Ambassador Sergio Gor, to Bangladesh. His visit will further strengthen the strategic partnership, regional security, and economic cooperation between the United States and Bangladesh.”

Diplomatic analysts say the visit comes at a significant time, following Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s recent visit to China and Bangladesh’s expanding diplomatic engagement with several countries.

According to senior government sources, Gor is scheduled to hold meetings on the first day of his visit with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman. He is also expected to exchange views with leaders of political parties, professionals, and representatives of civil society.

On the final day of his visit, the U.S. envoy is expected to travel to Cox’s Bazar to visit Rohingya refugee camps.

Diplomatic sources said discussions are likely to focus on Bangladesh’s current foreign policy priorities, its relations with China, India, and other key partners, regional geopolitical developments, economic cooperation, trade, and regional security.

Muhammad Sufian Rahman, former Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations in Geneva and a Senior Research Fellow at North South University, said the visit is aimed at gaining a clearer understanding of the new government's foreign policy direction. He noted that Gor’s assessment could influence the Trump administration’s future policy toward Bangladesh.

Security analyst Major General (Retd.) A.N.M. Muniruzzaman said Gor’s first visit to Bangladesh as special envoy could play an important role in shaping the future trajectory of bilateral relations.

U.S. President Donald Trump appointed Sergio Gor, a businessman, politician, and former White House official, as Special Envoy for South and Central Asia in August 2025. Since then, he has emerged as one of Washington’s key diplomatic figures on South Asian affairs.

In January this year, Gor assumed office as the youngest U.S. ambassador in New Delhi. Based in India, he oversees efforts to strengthen U.S. strategic relations with Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and other countries across South Asia.

Analysts believe the visit reflects Washington’s broader strategy to reinforce economic partnerships, regional stability, and its strategic position in the Indo-Pacific amid China’s growing influence in South Asia.
