Tarique Rahman Pays Tribute to July-August Uprising Victims at UNGA

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman began his address to the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly by paying tribute to those killed and injured during Bangladesh’s July-August 2024 mass uprising.

Delivering his speech in Bangla at the UN General Assembly in New York on Thursday, the prime minister remembered the victims of the uprising and those who were injured during the movement.

At the beginning of his address, Tarique Rahman paid deep respect to all the martyrs of Bangladesh’s Liberation War. He also remembered those who had sacrificed their lives in the struggle to establish democracy, justice and people’s rights in the country since independence.

He also paid tribute to those killed and injured in what he described as the mass uprising of students and the public against fascism in July-August 2024.

The prime minister said Bangladesh had now become free from what he described as fascist rule and exploitation following more than a decade and a half of political movements and struggles against such rule.

He further said that in the fair, free and impartial national election held on February 12 this year, the people of Bangladesh entrusted the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) with the responsibility of running the country.

Tarique congratulated the people of Bangladesh who, he said, had stood for democracy.

“We believe that the people are the source of all our political power,” the prime minister said.
