Chandranath Rath, personal assistant to senior Suvendu Adhikari, was shot dead in India’s West Bengal on Wednesday night, according to local reports.

The incident took place in the Doharia area near Jessore Road in Madhyamgram under North 24 Parganas district.

Eyewitnesses said unidentified attackers arrived on a motorcycle, intercepted the vehicle carrying Rath, and opened fire repeatedly.

Rath sustained multiple bullet injuries and was critically wounded at the scene. He was later taken to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Another person injured in the shooting is currently receiving treatment at a local nursing home.

According to local sources, Chandranath Rath was travelling from Kolkata to Madhyamgram in a Scorpio SUV when the attackers surrounded the vehicle near Jessore Road and launched the attack. Reports suggest he was shot several times in the chest.

The shooting triggered tension in the area. Police, along with the Rapid Action Force and central security forces, rushed to the scene and cordoned off the area. The bullet-riddled vehicle has been seized by police for investigation.

Following the incident, several leaders and legislators from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) arrived at both the scene and the hospital. Authorities have deployed additional security personnel to maintain law and order in the area.
