Neymar Retires from International Football

Brazil's all-time leading goalscorer Neymar has officially announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a glittering career with the national team that spanned more than 16 years.

The 34-year-old confirmed his decision after Santos' 4-2 victory over Venezuela's Universidad Central in the Copa Sudamericana, declaring: "My journey with the national team is over."

The announcement ends months of speculation over Neymar's international future following Brazil's elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The five-time world champions were knocked out in the Round of 16 after a defeat to Norway, a match that proved to be Neymar's final appearance in the famous yellow jersey.

Speaking after the match, Neymar said he had no regrets about stepping away from international football.

"My journey with the national team is over. I made history and experienced unforgettable moments. I gave my blood, my life—everything—for the yellow shirt. But I don't want to continue anymore," he said.

Neymar retires as Brazil's all-time leading scorer, having represented his country in multiple FIFA World Cups, Copa América tournaments, and the Olympic Games. His international career established him as one of the most successful and influential players in Brazilian football history.

The former Brazil captain said his full focus is now on his boyhood club, Santos.

Neymar also dismissed recent reports claiming he had harshly criticized and intimidated younger teammates in the dressing room after a league match. He insisted his comments were intended solely to motivate the squad and improve performances.

"It is unfortunate and frustrating, but it is not my fault. These rumors send the wrong message to many people," he said.

"I spoke to the players after the match because we need to perform better. We cannot be so careless. You simply cannot allow a winning game to end the way we did. As captain, I have every right to say that. Lucas Veríssimo and Gabigol also spoke to the players."

Despite the off-field speculation, Neymar delivered an impressive performance in Santos' 4-2 win over Universidad Central, helping the Brazilian club secure a place in the Copa Sudamericana Round of 16, where they will face Ecuadorian side Macará.
