Myanmar Agrees to Repatriate 305,000 Rohingya from Bangladesh and Malaysia, Says Anwar Ibrahim

Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced that Myanmar has agreed to repatriate approximately 305,000 Rohingya refugees, including 300,000 currently living in Bangladesh and 5,000 from Malaysia.

Speaking at a public gathering in Chennah, Negeri Sembilan, on Wednesday, Anwar said the agreement was reached following discussions between Malaysia and Myanmar.

“This success reflects Malaysia’s strong diplomatic relations,” Anwar said. “As part of the repatriation process, Myanmar has agreed to take back 5,000 Rohingya from Malaysia and 300,000 from Bangladesh.”

He stressed the importance of maintaining constructive ties with other countries, saying, “We held discussions. That is why it is important to maintain good relations with other nations. These issues require careful diplomacy.”

Anwar also made it clear that Malaysia would not tolerate any disruption to public order caused by Rohingya refugees.

He said he had instructed the Inspector-General of Police to take firm action against anyone responsible for creating unrest.

“In the past, calls to deport the Rohingya were difficult to implement because Myanmar refused to accept them,” the prime minister said. “People asked us to send them back, but where could we send them when Myanmar would not take them? That is why they had to be accommodated in designated locations.”

Anwar urged the Rohingya community living in Malaysia to respect local laws and refrain from actions that could inconvenience the public.

“Malaysia is our country. No one should disrupt its peace and stability. That is why we must remain firm,” he said.
