Indian High Commissioner Conveys Dhaka’s Message on ‘Enabling Environment’ to PM Modi

India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, has conveyed Dhaka’s message to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on creating an “enabling environment” to move forward bilateral relations between Bangladesh and India.
After holding a series of meetings with Bangladesh’s top leaders, including Prime Minister Tarek Rahman, Trivedi returned to New Delhi on Tuesday and discussed the issue with Prime Minister Modi, according to diplomatic sources in both countries.
The sources said several sensitive issues affecting bilateral ties also came up during the discussion. Trivedi is expected to convey to Bangladesh, upon his return to Dhaka, New Delhi’s message on how the relationship should move forward in line with Prime Minister Modi’s guidance.
A diplomatic source in New Delhi said Trivedi met Modi to seek his guidance on advancing relations between Dhaka and New Delhi.
In particular, the envoy sought the Prime Minister’s advice on how to further develop the two countries’ multidimensional and long-standing relationship through a “constructive and people-centric” approach.
Multiple diplomatic sources in India said Trivedi met Prime Minister Modi at the Parliament House in New Delhi at around 6pm local time on Tuesday. Their meeting lasted approximately an hour.
Diplomatic sources indicated that Trivedi briefed Modi on the messages conveyed by the Bangladesh side during his meetings over the previous two days with Prime Minister Tarek Rahman, Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman and Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed.
Government sources in Dhaka said the Indian High Commissioner had also raised the issue of a possible visit to New Delhi during his first courtesy meeting with Prime Minister Tarek Rahman on Monday.
According to the sources, Trivedi conveyed that the Indian government was interested in welcoming Prime Minister Tarek Rahman and his family to Delhi.
Following the meeting with the Prime Minister, Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman told reporters at a briefing held at the Foreign Ministry that Bangladesh had emphasized the need to create an “enabling environment” for taking bilateral relations forward.
“Creating the environment necessary to move the relationship forward is essential,” the Foreign Minister said.
After separate meetings with the Prime Minister, Foreign Minister and Home Minister on Monday, Trivedi also spoke to journalists at the Home Ministry.
He said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had consistently emphasized to him that maintaining good relations with Bangladesh was “particularly important.”
