Mahathir Mohamad Hospitalized Following Wife's Death, Condition Stable

Malaysia's former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has been hospitalized in Kuala Lumpur due to physical illness following the death of his wife of seven decades. The 101-year-old veteran leader has been admitted to the National Heart Institute for observation, according to his aide Sufi Yusoff.

Mahathir was taken to the hospital on Tuesday night, September 30. Sufi Yusoff stated that the exact medical reason for his hospitalization cannot be confirmed until official test reports from doctors are received. However, ever since the passing of his wife, Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, on Monday, Mahathir had been suffering from severe fatigue and a lack of adequate rest compounded by profound grief.

Describing Mahathir's current condition, his aide said, "His condition is stable now. However, emotional grief, excessive exhaustion, and lack of rest have worn him out. Such a situation is certainly not easy for anyone at the age of 101."

Notably, Mahathir's late wife Siti Hasmah was a physician and public health activist who passed away at the age of 100. During her funeral, a deeply grieving Mahathir was seen tearfully remarking that he never imagined she would leave so soon. In recent years, Mahathir has faced various cardiac complications and multiple hospitalizations due to old age, including a hip fracture after a fall in January.
