France Shaken by Student Protests, 440 Detained

Protests by high school students across France have intensified sharply, marked by localized clashes on Tuesday over overcrowded classrooms, severe teacher shortages, inadequate school infrastructure, and excessively long class hours.

French Interior Minister announced that 440 people were detained during Tuesday's unrest, a large proportion of whom are minors. What began last week as localized protests and school blockades in the Paris region has rapidly spread nationwide this week. In various locations, students blocked school entrances, set fire to garbage bins, and hurled bottles and stones at police, who responded with batons and tear gas. Authorities reported that 48 law enforcement officers were injured during the confrontations.

This student unrest coincides with nationwide strikes by public sector workers opposing the government's proposed austerity budget. According to the Ministry of Education, the protests have impacted roughly 400 out of France's 3,700 high schools. With next year's presidential election on the horizon, this convergence of grievances has significantly heightened political pressure on President Emmanuel Macron's administration.
