UN General Assembly Adopts Bangladesh-Led Resolution on Culture of Peace and Coexistence

The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a Bangladesh-sponsored resolution titled "Follow-up to the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace", reaffirming the global commitment to dialogue, tolerance, solidarity, and peaceful coexistence.

The resolution was adopted by a majority vote during a meeting of the General Assembly, according to a press release issued by the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations on Saturday.

Presenting the resolution, Bangladesh's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, underscored that sustained dialogue, mutual understanding, respect for diversity, and a strong commitment to the principles of the UN Charter are essential for building peaceful, inclusive, and tolerant societies.

He expressed gratitude to UN member states for their constructive engagement and broad support for the resolution, and called for renewed collective efforts to promote dialogue over division, cooperation over conflict, and mutual understanding over intolerance.

The ambassador noted that the resolution, first introduced by Bangladesh and adopted in 1999, has served as one of the principal foundations for advancing the United Nations' Culture of Peace agenda for nearly two and a half decades.

The resolution continues to play an important role in promoting the values of respect for diversity, tolerance, solidarity, and non-violence, while contributing to conflict prevention, peaceful coexistence, and stronger multilateral cooperation.
