The Bangladesh government has expressed profound shock and indignation after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, a fugitive convicted of crimes against humanity, was permitted to deliver a public speech in New Delhi. On Sunday (January 25), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a stern statement condemning the move.
Dhaka alleged that during the event held on January 23, Hasina called for the overthrow of the current government and incited violence to sabotage the upcoming national elections. The ministry emphasized that such open provocations for terrorism pose a severe threat to Bangladesh’s peace, security, and democratic transition.
The statement further highlighted that despite repeated requests under the bilateral extradition treaty, India has yet to hand over Sheikh Hasina. Instead, providing her a platform to incite unrest deeply hurts the sentiments of the Bangladeshi people. The ministry described the incident as a violation of international norms, such as respect for sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs, calling it a direct affront to the government and people of Bangladesh.
The government warned that such developments could set a dangerous precedent for the future of Bangladesh-India relations. It also noted that recent provocations by the banned Awami League leadership justify the interim government's decision to restrict the party's activities. The statement concluded by affirming the government’s resolve to take all necessary measures to prevent any conspiracy or violence surrounding the upcoming polls.
