Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, is reportedly unwilling to relocate to any third country and has expressed a strong preference to remain in India, where she is currently staying.
According to diplomatic sources cited by Bangladeshi daily Manabzamin, efforts were made during the interim government period to arrange her transfer through a trilateral understanding involving Bangladesh, India, and Qatar. However, the plan reportedly collapsed after Hasina declined to move, insisting she would remain in India.
The discussions reportedly gained momentum amid growing pressure for her extradition, prompting consideration of relocation to a third country. Qatar is said to have agreed in principle, but India ultimately refrained from enforcing the move, as it was not willing to compel her to leave against her wishes.
Sources further claim that the Indian government has gradually lost interest in Hasina’s leadership. There were reportedly behind-the-scenes efforts to explore alternative leadership within the Awami League to keep the party in electoral contention.
Among those considered was Saber Hossain Chowdhury, though Hasina reportedly did not approve, and he later declined the role. Another figure, Radwan Siddiq Bobby, son of Sheikh Rehana, was also reportedly invited to New Delhi and held discussions with Hasina, but no agreement was reached.
Following these unsuccessful efforts, India is said to have signaled acceptance of Bangladesh’s electoral process. Since then, the political landscape has shifted significantly.
Diplomatic sources indicate that relations between Dhaka and New Delhi are gradually returning to normal, with increased engagement from both sides. Efforts are underway to elevate bilateral ties, and visa processing is expected to resume, though likely not before upcoming elections in West Bengal.
According to the sources, multiple rounds of discussions have already taken place between Bangladesh and India on these matters. However, due to strategic considerations surrounding the elections, the government led by Bharatiya Janata Party has not yet shown strong interest in fully reopening visa services.
Visa issuance has largely remained suspended since August 5, 2024, although limited services continue in special cases.
